Understanding your child's 11+ score can be confusing. Different regions (like CSSE in Essex, or Kent) use different formulas. Use our free calculator below to estimate your weighted score based on raw marks.
CSSE Score Calculator (Estimator)
The CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) typically weights the exam as 50% English and 50% Maths. Use this tool to calculate the weighted total.

Estimated Weighted Score (Max 60 + 60 = 120)How is the 11 Plus Score Calculated?
Most 11+ exams use a Standardised Age Score (SAS). This is different from a raw percentage. The SAS takes into account:
- Your Child's Age: Younger children in the year group (born in August) get a few extra points compared to older children (born in September) to ensure fairness.
- Difficulty of the Paper: Scores are adjusted so the average is always 100.
A score of 100 is the average. A score of 115+ is usually considered very good and is often the benchmark for grammar school entry, though this varies by school.
What is a Good CSSE Score?
For Essex grammar schools (CSSE), the pass mark varies every year. Historically, a score of 303 (on their specific scale) or above has been safe for most schools, but some highly competitive schools like KEGS or CCHS may require higher scores.
Note: This calculator provides an estimate based on raw marks. The actual exam results will be standardised based on the cohort's performance.
